Mercedes Mone’s record reign of 313 days with the New Japan Strong Women’s Championship was finally halted in the main event of New Japan’s Resurgence event on May 9th in the Toyota Arena in Ontario, California.
Competing in the main event despite the presence of an IWGP World Heavyweight Championship match between Hirooki Goto and Zack Sabre Jr., Mercedes Mone would lose her belt when AZM rolled up Mina Shirakawa with the Azumi Sushi to claim her first singles title since dropping the High-Speed Championship in 2023, in 17 minutes and 53 seconds; becoming the youngest champion in the belt’s short lineage.
Backstage, former-World of Stardom Champion Bea Priestley – who had her first match post-WWE release earlier on the ‘Buy In’ of Resurgence, pinning Viva Van in less than 5 minutes – congratulated her former-Queen’s Quest teammate whilst simultaneously seeming to declare herself the new number one contender for the belt!
No new US dates have been confirmed as of yet by New Japan as they enter their busiest period of the year in transitioning from the Best of the Super Juniors into Dominion and then into the G1 Climax, however the AEW and New Japan Forbidden Door show in London on August 24th would be the perfect place for a defence of the title.
