Mayu Iwatani’s incredible run with the IWGP Women’s Championship was under threat inside the Tokyo Dome on January 4th at Wrestle Kingdom 19.
In match number 2 of the main card, Mayu Iwatani defeated the challenger AZM via a Two-Step Dragon Suplex in just under 9 minutes in a breathless match to achieve her ninth successful title defence. She is now just four defences away from her goal of surpassing the twelve achieved by Kazuchika Okada during his 720-day reign with the now defunct IWGP Heavyweight Championship; the most successful defences in the modern-era of New Japan.
Iwatani’s 9 defences have included matches against Momo Watanabe, Toni Storm, Stephanie Vaquer, Sareee and Mercedes Mone, with her reign now eclipsing 622 unbroken days. It is currently the longest ongoing title reign in both New Japan and Stardom.
It’s the second time that the IWGP Women’s Championship has been defended at the Tokyo Dome, with KAIRI successfully defending the belt against Tam Nakano back at Wrestle Kingdom 17 in 2023.
