After a rather unsatisfactory ending to a great number one contendership match at Windy City Riot saw AZM and Mina Shirakawa fight to a double countout, the championship match for New Japan’s next American event has been confirmed.
Immediately following the match at Windy City Riot, both AZM and Mina were vocal in their disappointment that no clear cut winner could be found, which led to Rocky Romero announcing a three-way for the New Japan Strong Women’s Championship between AZM, Mina Shirakawa and champion Mercedes Mone.
On social media, it was then officially confirmed on Tuesday 15th April that the match would be taking place at Resurgence on May 9th, which will be airing from the Toyota Arena in Ontario, California. This will be Mone’s fifth title defence, and first since she defeated Mina Shirakawa in the Tokyo Dome in a double title match on January 5th. For AZM, this will be the first time challenging Mone for the title, though she was part of a three-way at Sakura Genesis 2023 for the IWGP Women’s Championship that also included Mone and Hazuki.
The match has been announced alongside Konosuke Takeshita vs. El Phantasmo for the NEVER Openweight Championship, Tomohiro Ishii defending his newly-won NJPW Strong Openweight Championship against Drilla Maloney, the return of the Young Bucks and Royce Isaacs and Jorel Nelson defending the NJPW Strong Openweight Tag Team Championships against Templario and TJP.
